Yacht Bathroom Refit: Replacing Onboard Faucets

A refit is one of the smartest decisions an owner can make: renewing a boat you know and love costs a fraction of a new build and increases its value, comfort and pleasure of use. And among refit jobs, the onboard bathroom is one of the most transformative: a few square meters that change the feel of the whole boat.

Faucets play a central role in this work. But replacing onboard faucets has historically meant invasive work, extra holes and long downtime. Today that is no longer necessarily the case. Let's look at when it pays to act, what the problems of the traditional refit are, and how new-generation installation systems solve them.

When a faucet refit makes sense

There are three typical situations in which replacing onboard faucets goes from option to necessity:

Corrosion and wear. Deep pitting on the bodies, widespread oxidation, compromised finishes: once corrosion goes past the surface layer, no maintenance can recover the component. It is the frequent fate of faucets not born for the nautical world, perhaps fitted in an earlier refit to keep costs down.

Recurring leaks. A cartridge can be replaced; but when leaks return at several points and spare parts are no longer available — common on boats more than 15-20 years old — full replacement is cheaper than chasing failures. And onboard a leak is not just a nuisance: it is water where it shouldn't be, in closed spaces that are hard to inspect.

Interior restyling. The most pleasant case: the bathroom works, but the look is dated. In a restyling, faucets give the best ratio of visual impact to complexity of work — provided you choose solutions that don't require redoing the countertops.

The problems of the traditional refit

Anyone who has tackled an onboard bathroom refit the traditional way knows the issues:

  • New holes. Every faucet has its own hole spacing and diameters: changing model often means drilling fresh holes in fine materials — teak, Corian, stone — risking damage and certainly weakening them.

  • Hidden runs. The systems run behind bulkheads and furniture: reaching fittings and hoses can require extensive dismantling, which multiplies work hours and the risk of collateral damage.

  • Boat downtime. Between dismantling, adjustments, any countertop work and reassembly, a traditional bathroom refit can keep the boat out of use for weeks — a real cost, especially in season.

  • Compromised future maintenance. The worst paradox: a refit done with hard-to-reach components sets the stage for the next problem.

  • Condition of the upstream system: hoses, fittings and existing shut-off valves should be inspected now, while everything is accessible;

  • Hole spacing and diameters of the existing holes: the ideal solution reuses them; otherwise, consider models and plates that cover them without new drilling;

  • Compatibility with the boat system's pressures and flow rates and with any desalinator;

  • Space behind the bulkhead actually available for built-in bodies and fittings;

  • Availability of spare parts and technical support from the maker in the years to come;

  • Coherence of the finishes with the other metals onboard, if the refit is partial;

  • Seasonal planning: scheduling the work during the layup period brings the cost of downtime to zero.

Conclusion

The onboard bathroom refit is no longer a byword for invasive work.
